Juan Carlos Ferrero has broken his silence to delve into the reasons that led to the end of his successful professional relationship with Carlos Alcaraz. After a period of assimilation, the Valencian coach explained that the final trigger was not personal wear or a lack of results, but a series of insurmountable discrepancies arising during the negotiation of his new contract.
Ferrero has been forceful when stating: “There were things in the contract that I could not accept on principle,” pointing out that the document clashed head on with his values, as he explained to Spanish National Radio.
The former world number one clarified that the breakup occurred abruptly after the return of the Davis Cup in Bologna, a moment in which nothing predicted this outcome. According to his story, he was presented with a contractual proposal that he had to review and sign within a very short period of time, which made dialogue difficult. In this regard, the coach was very clear about his position regarding the new conditions: “I know who I am, where I come from and what my principles are”, making it clear that he was not willing to give in on fundamental points.
Ferrero stressed that his decision was not motivated by economic ambitions, recalling that he has always prioritized the sporting project over money. For him, the problem lay in the nature of the new imposed clauses, which he could not accept without betraying his way of being. “I have tried to be the same person since I started playing tennis until today”explained the Valencian, who prefers to maintain his personal integrity above any high-level professional agreement.
Despite the firmness in his principles, the coach did not hide the emotional pain that this separation caused him after almost eight years of working together. He described the process as a necessary mourning, admitting that watching Alcaraz compete in upcoming tournaments without him on the bench will be a difficult experience to process. Regarding this feeling of loss, Ferrero honestly confessed: “It has been the biggest blow of my sporting career,” evidencing the deep bond that united him with the young man from Murcia.
Regarding the direct relationship with the player, Ferrero assured that there have been no fights or serious personal conflicts during the season that justified this ending. He explained that, in the negotiations, Carlos’s entourage sought to defend their interests while he defended his, without reaching a common point. “The negotiations have been on the other hand, Carlos on the court has been the same as always with me,” he clarified to disassociate the tennis player from the administrative tensions that caused the breakup.
Regarding the immediate future of Carlos Alcaraz, Ferrero was optimistic and trusted that the young talent will not lose his competitive path. He highlighted that the Murcian has a genuine love for the game and that he has enough ability to continue winning important titles. “Carlos is going to continue winning because he is a competitive animal,” he stated with confidence, also endorsing Samuel López as the ideal leader to lead the technical team in this new transition stage.
Finally, Juan Carlos Ferrero did not want to definitively close the door to a future collaboration with Alcaraz, although for now the stage is concluded. He prefers that time calms the waters and that everyone goes their own way with respect and professionalism. He says goodbye grateful for having lived a sporting dream and convinced that personal coherence is his greatest asset: “I leave with a very clear conscience because I have given one hundred percent until the last day.”
