Federico Gomez He lived a changing, demanding and emotionally draining 2025. A year that began with the best ranking of his career — 133 in the world — and that, months later, found him falling to 250th place, immersed in doubts, defeats in a row and a personal process that forced him to stop and publicly ask for help. But it was also the year in which he managed to take an unexpected turn and close the season with a title that was not in my plans: he Temuco Challengerin Chile.

“The truth is that I am very happy to have been able to end the year with a title. It had never happened to me“, he says in conversation with Infobae.

The 29-year-old tennis player had been accumulating frustrating weeks: close defeats, tiebreakers in third sets and the permanent feeling of being close without being able to achieve a goal. “It wasn’t a good year and it wasn’t coming off good weeks either. I was very close to many games and they weren’t happening to me,” he remembers.

The title in Chilein addition to being unexpected, had a peculiarity: Gómez I didn’t want to travel. Exhausted and eager to start his vacation, his team convinced him: “It was the week of my birthday and I didn’t want to go. But they pushed me a little more. We arrived on Monday afternoon, I hit it for a while with my trainer and I felt good. There I said: ‘Well, we’re here. Let’s fight it’”.

The result could not have been better: champion in singles for the first time this year – he defeated Lautaro Midón (266) by 6-4 y 6-1 in the final – and an emotional boost that I did not imagine. “It’s nice when things happen like this, when you win in the unexpected“, summarizes the Bombardierwhich this week, for The AAT Interclub Finalsrepresents the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club: he was the protagonist of the doubles with Andrés Molteninumber 25 in the world in the specialty, in the victory over Temperley which earned qualification to the semifinals.

2025 had found Gómez with room to grow, but also with a heavy backpack: defending the points of three Challenger titles obtained in the second half of 2024.

“Having so many points concentrated in so few weeks It puts extra pressure on you. This year I felt it. At first we decided to play ATP, but I had nine eliminations in a row in the first round“, he remembers. The results did not appear and the tennis player’s ranking Ituzaingó started to fall. “I knew it was going to be tough. That’s why my goal for next year is to be more consistent and not depend so much on specific weeks”, he mentions.

Despite everything, Gómez managed to achieve one goal: finish the year within the top 200. It was not enough for him to enter directly into the Australian Openfirst Grand Slam of the year, but he takes it as a positive aspect: “I have a little more vacation and time to prepare for the season.”

One of the most significant moments of his season occurred off the field. Gómez published in Instagram an intimate text in which he talked about his emotional difficulties and asked for help. He did it in the midst of a sporting boom and surprised the Argentine tennis environment.

“I’m better, but It is not something that is cured overnight. There are good days and bad days. I told it at a time when my ranking was good, but I had been losing for many weeks. It was difficult for me to compete, it was difficult for me to enjoy”he explains.

Write those lines -add the Bombardier– it was a process of months. He did it on trips, airplanes and downtime. And he shared them first with a single member of his team. “They had recommended that I not publish the letter for fear of negative repercussions and losing sponsors. or be exposed. But I didn’t sleep well that night. The next day I said: ‘I’m going to do it anyway.’ And so it was.”L

Opening up relieved him. Gómez was able to start talking, share what he felt with his team, stop keeping everything to himself. “It was impacting my daily life, my energy and my tennis. It was making me worse”, he admits.

Gómez does not hide it: the goal for 2026 will be to enter the top 100 in the world for the first time. “It’s something I had as a goal this year as well. Looking at it cold, Maybe it was a little rushed. One is 130 and feels like it’s close, but the road is long“You have to be consistent for many weeks,” he reflects.

The points added in the US Open and the momentum of this season finale excites him. Their goal is to avoid the ups and downs and maintain daily motivation, something that during 2025 became their daily fight.

In a few days, tennis will have a pause. Gómez wants to rediscover his hobbies – golf, fishing and swimming – and take advantage of the little time he usually spends in Buenos Aires. “When I’m here, time flies. Between medical studies, friends, dinners, coffees… “Everything happens very quickly.”

Before the complete break, he competes in the Interclub finals, an event he particularly enjoys. “It is very nice, there is spectacular weather and a real tournament atmosphere. That it can be done on a fast court and in a neutral place, where they can come from all the clubs, is very nice. And he calls the best players: last year the one and two in the country (Francisco Cerúndolo and Sebastián Báez) were playing in the final. I hope it continues to grow.”
