Enrico Varriale: New Accusation, Potential Sentence

The journalist was already convicted last June for beating and persecuting his ex-partner

Enrico Varriale faces a six-month prison sentence for one slap given to one of his exes at the end of an argument. The request was made by the prosecutor during the trial currently underway, whose sentence is scheduled for December 22nd.

The prosecutor, however, proposed acquittal for the crime of stalking because the journalist would not have obsessed with threatening phone calls this second woman, whose identity was not revealed, who reported him for injuries, causing him to end up on trial again. The last June Enrico Varriale he was sentenced to ten months in the first instance because he allegedly beat and persecuted his ex in the summer of 2021. The prosecutor spoke of exasperating behaviour, while the journalist’s lawyer, after the sentence, commented on how his client’s only fault was that of having sent dozens of messages to meet his ex-partner and apologize to her.

In parallel with that sentence, the complaint from another woman who had a relationship with Varriale immediately after the end of the story with his ex-partner. The relationship between them would have been very stormy from the beginning and on 8 December 2021 there would have been a more violent argument than others culminating in a slap. According to the prosecution on that occasion the journalist had first he pushed the woman and then he slapped her. The victim also went to the hospital to obtain a medical report of the attack he suffered. Ten days later Enrico Varriale phoned her with a fake voice threatening her with death. But the journalist denied the reconstruction, claiming to have told her: “I’m Enrico and I’m in Rai and you won’t die”. A version accepted by the prosecutor’s office who requested acquittal for the crime of stalking and threats.

Meanwhile, last October, the sports journalist, host of various Rai TV programs for years, was fired from public television for just cause. The decision would not be linked to criminal proceedings but to behavior carried out by the journalist judged to be seriously incorrect, in violation of the commitments signed in the contract.
