But the commissioners considered that it was the Japanese who was guilty of zigzags prohibited by the regulations. He therefore received a 5-second penalty for changing direction twice.
Before the start, the 3 drivers were separated by only 16 points. Caught between the two McLarens, the Dutchman was 12 points behind the leader and must finish on the podium – hoping for a misstep from his two competitors – to hope to win a 5th title.
