Eschede Knecht-Ruprecht Run: 3rd Advent Race 2023

On the third Sunday of Advent, December 14, 2025, the 2nd Knecht-Ruprecht Run took place in Eschede. The badminton department of TuS Eschede had invited, and with this event they continued an idea that had started last year. Around 40 runners took part in the community run.

The Knecht-Ruprecht Run arose from an existing group of sportingly active people, which initially formed around the badminton department, but now extends far beyond that. A regular running meeting in Eschede also developed from this network. The idea of making it a public run during Advent was first implemented last year and has now been taken up again.

At the start, Helge Dräger, head of the badminton department at TuS Eschede, welcomed the participants in the Eschenhalle. He explained the course of the event and highlighted the basic idea of the run: The ten kilometers should not be completed on time, but at a pace that suits each individual – with the aim of reaching the finish line if possible together. To make this possible, several starting groups were formed that set off on the course at different times.

Martin Steding, deputy department head, addressed the event’s literary reference in his speech. With a wink, he recalled the line “Lift your legs and hurry up” from the poem “Knecht Ruprecht” by Theodor Storm. There were short text passages and information along the route that accompanied the run thematically.

The route initially led in small groups and in compliance with the road traffic regulations through the town towards the train station. We then went into the adjacent forest area, where the majority of the ten kilometers were completed in quiet surroundings. The planned finish was scheduled for around 11:30 a.m. A special gesture was waiting at the finish: a bell, which – according to Steding – each runner was allowed to ring after they arrived.

The Barneville-Carteret Friends once again provided the food. Its chairman Uwe Trampenau and his team prepared cakes and drinks. In the Ash Hall, banners recalled the partnership with the French community of Barneville-Carteret and underlined the international exchange, which is also present at local events.

The finale was a common conclusion in the anteroom of the hall. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants and helpers talked to each other – in keeping with the approach of combining physical exercise, community and the pre-Christmas season.
