It emerged during the Christmas holiday – and was confirmed on Boxing Day. The players in the North American professional league, the ECHL, would go on strike and several games would be postponed.
This after the players’ union (PHPA) protested against the conditions they are given by the league to play professional ice hockey. Players wanted several things to be improved, including the equipment being described as poor and used. A schedule that was unsustainable and unreasonably low financial compensation.
But on Saturday, the parties reached an agreement. However, the new agreement must be approved by both the players’ union and the league’s owners before play can resume.
Players have been threatened
The players’ association has previously stated that the ECHL communicated directly with individual players with the aim of “bullying” and “intimidating” them in ways they believe violate American law. The star agent Alan Wallsh means that players have been “threatened” and that the league has spread incorrect information about players in the past.
Ten Swedes have played in the ECHL, the third North American professional league, during the autumn. Including players like Calle Odelius, Samuel Jonsson and Loke Johansson.
