Fortunately, MLB has a wide list of stars and captivating figures, all protagonists of a plot that will keep us entertained throughout the season to keep the excitement alive.
The new year will bring with it countless surprises. But here are the 10 players we hope will define the campaign.
Elly De La cruz, SS, Reds
We’ve all been predicting that De La Cruz will be an MVP since he arrived in the majors in June 2023 — actually, since we first saw him, to be honest. But, although the Dominican has been called to the All-star Game and has received MVP votes in both of his full seasons, he has not yet taken his game to that elite level… at least not yet.
2025, and the dominican lead the Majors in errors for the second consecutive season. (In fairness, he apparently was dealing with persistent quadriceps discomfort all year.) Still, there were signs of enhancement: His strikeout rate went down and his walk rate went up. But the Reds need Elly to take that next big leap. The good news is that he will only be 24 years old on January 11. You still have many, many steps to take.

The Dominican star slugger had an outstanding year in 2025, an improvement compared to his disappointing 2024 and, of course, a campaign that culminated with a division title and a participation in the american League Championship Series. But the flagship star of the Mariners’ resurgence since winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2022 was not, in fact, the team’s star this year: That honor went to Cal Raleigh, the “Big Dumper.”
However, Rodríguez remains the future of this franchise, and it would be helpful for Seattle if the Dominican could advance a little more in the aspects that still cost him (discipline at the plate, strikeouts). And let’s not forget his last at-bat of the season: A swinging third strike outside the zone to end the ALCS, which sums up, in miniature, what still frustrates us about Julio. We all thought that one day he would be an MVP. Is it closer to that than in 2022, or further away? A big step forward could restore him to top star status…even with the Big Dumper still on the team.
Paul Skenes, LD, Pirates
Everything Skenes has achieved in his career has been ahead of schedule. He looked dominant from his first major league pitch and, in his second year, he went one better, winning the first — presumably of many — Cy Young Award of his career. Two seasons after his debut, he still maintains a career ERA better than 2.00,which is simply insane.
The big questions are the following:
- Can it improve more?
- can the Pirates take advantage of having the best pitcher in baseball?
That last one might potentially be the key, at least in terms of what will determine the focus of the conversation about Skenes. Will we be talking about what he’s doing… or where he’s doing it?
Tarik Skubal, LZ, Tigres
Only four pitchers have won three Cy young Awards and are not in the Hall of Fame: Roger Clemens (who has seven and has not been inducted for reasons unrelated to his statistics), plus Max Scherzer, Clayton Kershaw and Justin Verlander, who seem destined to enter as soon as they are eligible.
Skubal will go for his third consecutive Cy Young in 2026 and, beyond fluctuations in effectiveness, he had practically the same season in 2025 as he did in 2024.If he does it again, he will win that third Cy Young. That is… if he’s still in the American League. Yes, one of the big questions about skubal remains: Will he still be a part of the Tigers on Opening Day? After the Trade Deadline? Within a year?
Juan Soto, RF, Mets
Soto’s first season in Flushing ended in collective disappointment, but through no fault of his own. It was everything the Mets paid for — and more — with a career-high 43 home runs and, surprisingly, a tie for the NL lead in stolen bases with 38. (Less surprising: He led the majors in walks for the fourth time in the last five years.)
Despite the well-deserved appreciation that Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor receives, this team will become more and more like Soto’s as the years go by. With that, the Dominican star can hope to leave behind the Mets’ complicated history in the final stretch of the campaigns and lead the transition to a new era of baseball in Queens. He is already a future Hall of Famer. Now it’s time to become, to steal a nickname, the real “mr. met.”
Kyle Tucker, OF, free agent
What is considered by consensus to be the best free agent of the offseason is still available, and his decision could entirely alter the balance of power in either league. But irrespective of where he ends up, the big question will be whether he can stay a little healthier than he was in his time in Chicago in 2025 or his final season with Houston in 2024. If he can, he’ll be an MVP-caliber addition to any lineup and will make his new fans very, very happy.
