Memphis Depay has won the national cup for his Brazilian club Corinthians with the winning goal. The Dutch attacker made it 1-2 with a tap-in against Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro in the second match of the final. That was enough after a 0-0 in the first leg.
After the match, Depay was not very happy. He lashed out at the board of the Brazilian club, speaking to ESPN Brasil.
‘They want fans to hate me’
After winning the cup final, the Dutchman stated that the board “needs to wake up” and that they should “make a mess somewhere else”. Corinthians has been in financial trouble for some time now.
According to the striker, a lot happens behind the scenes of his employer. “Let’s be honest: the club is in a terrible situation. There is a lot of talk in the press, many things are easily distorted. They lie about me, about my salary. They want the fans to hate me so that I leave.”
But the attacker has no intention of doing that. He would rather see some people from the board leave sooner. “The fans love me and I love them. Anyone who wants to ruin Corinthians must leave. This club needs structure. That’s why I came here, but I need help.”
Second prize
For Depay, winning the national cup was his second prize at Corinthians. The former striker of PSV, Manchester United and FC Barcelona previously won the Campeonato Paulista, the championship of the state of São Paulo.
Corinthians took the lead on Sunday through Yuri Alberto and Nuno Moreira equalized just before half-time. Twenty minutes after half-time, Depay scored and then Corinthians held on.
It is the fourth time that Corinthians has won the cup. The last time was in 2009. The club from São Paulo finished thirteenth in the competition last season, Vasco fourteenth.
