Universidad de Chile is intensifying the search for Gustavo Álvarez’s successor, and a name that figures among their priorities has caught the attention of Brazilian football. This is Martín Anselmi, the young Argentine head coach who is currently a free agent after a recent stint in Europe.
However, Azul Azul’s path to signing Anselmi has become complicated, as Brazil’s Cruzeiro has also put the strategist on their radar.
According to ESPN Brazil, Anselmi, who had a successful spell at Independiente del Valle and coached Porto in the FIFA Club World Cup, is being considered by the Belo Horizonte squad.
Although Martín Anselmi is an option for Cruzeiro, their main candidates are the Brazilian Tite and the Uruguayan Paulo Pezzolano. Even so, Brazilian interest represents a serious obstacle for “La U.”
During the 2025 season, Anselmi was in charge of Cruz Azul and Porto, managing a total of 44 matches, in which he achieved 24 victories, 11 draws, and 9 defeats. Despite his experience in Europe, the coach parted ways with the Portuguese club in September due to poor results.
In Universidad de Chile’s considerations, Anselmi is behind other names such as Renato Paiva. The board will have to speed up negotiations if they wish to secure the Argentine, who is now a sought-after figure in the competitive South American market.
