The dream of a fairytale cup run can quickly turn into a logistical nightmare, as the Marcq-en-Barœul club is learning firsthand. Just two days after the highly anticipated draw for the 32nd round of the Coupe de France – a moment of pure elation for amateur clubs across the nation – the reality of the match schedule has cast a shadow over their excitement. The French football Federation (FFF) and broadcaster BeIN Sports have unveiled the fixture list, and Marcq-en-Barœul’s clash against Ligue 2 leaders Troyes is set for Friday, December 19th, at 8:45 PM.
“It was supposed to be a festivity, an prospect to play a major 32nd-round match of the Coupe de France against the top team in Ligue 2,” lamented Marcq-en-Barœul coach Samir Guelsifi to Ici Nord. “Now, it feels more like a chore than anything else. Our players, who are all working professionals in a Regional 1 team, will have to make meaningful sacrifices. It feels like the amateur clubs weren’t truly considered in this decision.”
Playing on a Friday evening presents a considerable challenge for players who juggle their passion for football with the demands of their day jobs. “Some players won’t be able to take the day off. They’ll have woken up at 5 AM, worked all day, and will be fatigued before even stepping onto the pitch to face a Ligue 2 side,” Guelsifi explained. “I find it incredibly disappointing that we weren’t consulted. I’m frustrated.”
“It Spoils the Party”
guelsifi confirmed that option scheduling was proposed. “Our secretary inquired about preferred match times, and I suggested Saturday at 6 PM would have been ideal for everyone,” he stated. “We had already reached an agreement with Troyes very quickly. the FFF acknowledged our request but indicated that they weren’t the sole decision-makers, with BeIN Sports holding the final say.”
The broadcaster’s decision means the match will run concurrently with other significant Coupe de France fixtures, including those involving RC Lens, Angers, and Brest.”It truly spoils the party,” the coach expressed. “We have players with families who are traveling from afar, and they won’t be able to attend because it’s a Friday. It’s simply not feasible for everyone to take the day off.We’ll make it work, but it’s a shame.”
