(Indianapolis) The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to a contract with 44-year-old veteran quarterback Philip Rivers, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has yet to confirm the information.
Rivers played his last game with the Colts in the NFL playoffs in 2020. He then announced his retirement in January 2021, and has since led the team at St. Michael High School in Fairhope, Alabama.
The announcement began circulating less than 24 hours after Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that No. 1 quarterback Daniel Jones would miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles tendon in his right foot and that his replacement, Riley Leonard, injured his right knee in last Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars in Jacksonville.
Rivers tested out Tuesday in Indianapolis, and the Colts (8-5) wasted no time adding the former All-Star to their practice squad. It is not yet known whether Rivers will be ready to play next weekend against the Seahawks (10-3) or whether the Colts need him.
