CARTAGENA. The Cartagena urban racing league will be accompanied in 2026 from another with mountain athletic eventsas reported by City hall of the town, which also estimated 40% growth in participation in popular races thanks to the municipal competition launched in 2025, which is ending.
The Consistory, in collaboration with local athletics clubs and different associationslaunched the second edition of this contest, known as Carthago Running Leaguewhich comes with new features to respond to the growing demand for athletics in the municipality. The launch of the Carthago Mountain League is the main one and the Sports Councilor referred to it, Jose Martinez.
“The running culture in the city of Cartagena continues to grow and for this reason both the City Council and Mayor Noelia Arroyo are committed to continuing to work to promote this sporting practice that increasingly reaches more people and that has undoubtedly become a lifestyle for many”said the mayor, who offered data on the first season of this league.
“The average participation in races that allowed growth, that is, in which there were places available or the possibility of obtaining new places, the increase was above 40% on average. In total numbers, 15,228 runners participated in the tests held in Cartagena compared to 11,671 in previous editions”he explained.
Both the Carthago Running League and the Carthago Mountain League are two annual racing leagues in which participants add points at each event and, at the end of both events, prizes will be awarded according to the general classification.
Both competitions promoted by the Cartagena City Council have outstanding events on their calendar, such as the Route of the Fortresses and the Artillery Cross.
In total they will be 18 urban tests -Huertecica Mile, Cartagena City Half Marathon, Virgen del Mar Popular Race, La Azohía Popular Race, ARX Asdrubalis, Cross de Alumbres, Cross de La Palma, Cross Paraíso Artillery, Move Life Race, Cuatro Santos 4km Race and Mar Menor Running- and mountain eight -CXM Vista Alegre Trail Sierra Gorda, IV King of the Mountain, IV Cross-Trail Villa y Condado de Santa Lucía, VIII Trail de Alumbres, XV Ruta de las Fortalezas, Burro Trail, Cross Trail El Portús and VII Trail Sendero del Agua-.
They will be established categories sub20, sub23, senior, veterans and for people with disabilities and, furthermore, there will be a mixed club classification -The first three male and the first three female athletes from each team in the running modality and two in each case in the mountain will score. Likewise The club with the most representation will be awarded taking into account those who reach the goal.
Los finisher will be those who reach the goal in 66% of the scheduled tests, that is ten in the urban section and five in the mountain section. As for the finisher oro will be the ones who complete all races.
