The goalkeeper situation at FC Bayern remains unclear. A decision was apparently communicated to Manuel Neuer, Jonas Urbig and Alexander Nübel.

Munich – As one of the best clubs in Europe, FC Bayern has been striving for decades to provide strong support in goal. Manuel Neuer has been taking on this role for almost 15 years, and in 2011 the almost 40-year-old joined the German record champions. Theoretically, there are two successors ready: Jonas Urbig and Alexander Nübel. Has it already been decided who will be the new number one on the Isar?

Manuel Neuer’s contract expires in summer 2026. At the moment, the world champion doesn’t seem to have any ambition to hang up his football boots any time soon. The Bild-Podcast Bayern Insider recently revealed that no new, internationally experienced top keeper will be signed in the summer.

Neuer, Urbig and Nübel: This is the status of FC Bayern’s goalkeepers

According to information from Bild One thing is clear: Alexander Nübel is still fighting for Neuer’s successor on the Isar. The goalkeeper, who is currently on loan at VfB Stuttgar, still has a contract with Bayern until 2030. If Neuer signs another working paper in Munich, there should be no return of Nübel. In this case, a sale is also possible.

But what happens if Manuel Neuer says in a few months: It’s over, you can stop at 40? Nübel and Urbig could fight an open competition for the new number 1. The Bayern bosses are said to be of the opinion that they can identify the better player in this way and that a fair chance for Nübel would be guaranteed.

Sports director Christoph Freund confirmed Bild-Query on Friday: Nübel and Urbig can prove themselves in the event of Neuer’s farewell. Freund said about Nübel: “He is our goalkeeper, is playing a good season and has really developed over the last one or two years. Alex is certainly one of the best goalkeepers in Germany.

And further: “We are very happy that we are very well positioned for the time after Manuel, when that comes at some point. Then the decisions will be made. But we are very happy that we have goalkeepers in our back pocket who are currently playing at a very high level.” Goalkeeping coach Michaelrechner is in regular contact with the 29-year-old and thinks highly of him.

Neuer speaks out for Urbig in the Bayern goal – Nübel not out

His problem: Urbig is currently ahead. “It’s no problem for him that he can and will succeed me. He definitely has the support of Sven and me. We are a good team. We support each other every day, we always try to push ourselves to the limit so that the bar is set a little higher. He has already shown in the games that he can do it, and he will continue to do so,” praised Manuel Neuer.

The advance praise is of course a powerful argument for Urbig; he should be allowed to play a few games in the 2025/26 season. Will Nübel’s downfall in this context be that his own relationship with Neuer probably wasn’t the best? In the coming months, the 39-year-old will decide for himself what happens next. And with it what fate befalls Alexander Nübel. (is)
