Latvian defenseman Uvis Jānis Balinskis scored his first goal of the season on Sunday in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular championship match, helping the Florida “Panthers” team defeat the New York “Islanders” at home. The champion team of the previous two years “Panthers” won 4:1 at home, and Balinskis was recognized as the third star of the game.

Balinski played 17 minutes and 30 seconds, had three shots on goal, one on target, one power play, one turnover and a positive +2 efficiency rating.

After the match, Balinski praised his teammate Ajay Greer, who covered the goalkeeper’s vision well. Balinskis emphasized that it helps a lot in the course of the game if the defenders shoot at the goal and the forwards are active in front of the goal.
This season, Balinskis played in 19 matches, in which he accumulated five (1+4) performance points, six penalty minutes and a positive efficiency coefficient of +1.

It was Balinskis who opened the score of the game in the 13th minute of Sunday’s game with a shot from the blue line, and in the eighth minute of the second period, Carter Verhegy made it 2-0 for the home team. Two minutes later, Matthew Barzals got one goal back for the guests, however, in the continuation, only the “Panthers” hockey players made accurate shots.
In the 54th minute of the game, Seth Jones made it 3:1, and in the 58th minute, Sam Reinhart made the final score 4:1 with a shot into an empty net.
With 30 points in 28 games, the “Panthers” are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference and will play their next game on Thursday night Latvian time, when they will meet the Utah “Mammoth” hockey players.
The Philadelphia “Flyers” represented by the Latvian hockey player Rodrigo Ābola lost to the NHL’s leading team Colorado “Avalanche” on Sunday. “Flyers” lost 2-3 at home. In the eight minutes and 27 seconds spent on the court, Abols scored once, blocked one opponent’s shot, won four out of five shots and ended the match with a neutral efficiency ratio.
The Columbus “Blue Jackets” and Pittsburgh “Penguins” experienced losses in NHL matches on Sunday without Latvian goalkeepers Elvja Merzlikina and Artūrs Šilova on the ice. The “Blue Jackets” with Merzlikin on the bench lost to the Washington Capitals 0:2, while the “Penguins” with Shilov in the reserve lost 2:3 to the Dallas “Stars” in the shootout.
