Ismail Atriki wins 5km and 10km races in Girona

The 47th edition of the Cursa del Carrer Nou in Girona proceeded normally after threatening rain cleared, drawing roughly 1,500 athletes across all categories. Local runner Ismail Atriki dominated the event by winning both the 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races.

Skies Hold Stable for Historic Girona Event

Organizers faced two days of unfavorable weather forecasts before the event. Mercè Ramírez de Cartagena, president of Girona Centre Eix Comercial, noted that changing the date would have diluted the event’s brilliance. The race combines sports with local commerce and a charitable component. Events ranged from the 5 km and 10 km races to an Urban Mile and children’s dashes.

Atriki Sweeps 5k and 10k Titles

Ismail Atriki opened his day by winning the 5 km race in 14 minutes and 45 seconds, navigating a course through the rambla de la Llibertat, the places del Vi and de la Independència, the pont de Pedret, and different streets of the Barri Vell. Nicolás Michael followed in 15:57, with Aniol Bochaca third in 16:19. Marta Garcia led the women’s 5 km field at 19:31, ahead of Francesca J. Hall (19:55) and Ella Harris (20:53).

Without pausing, Atriki entered the 10 km race, which featured a revised route passing through Plaça Lladoners, the city wall, and the climb up Les Pedreres. He won the longer event in 30 minutes and 27 seconds. Sergio Fernández placed second in 31:52, closely followed by Aleix Ferrer in 31:54. Rachel Ann Brown won the women’s 10 km division in 35 minutes and 39 seconds, followed by Julia Franke (38:46) and María de las Mercedes Martín (39:27).

A Tradition Rooted in Local Commerce

Established in 1979 by city center merchants to enliven the street and contribute to Girona, the Cursa del Carrer Nou has grown over 47 editions to attract international participants. Alongside the athletic competition, Girona Centre Eix Comercial distributed gift vouchers to participants for use at affiliated local businesses.
