Atlético ended the 2025 Brazilian Championship with a great performance. This Sunday (07), at Arena MRV, the team led by Jorge Sampaoli overpowered Vasco 5 x 0, in a match in which they did not give their opponent any chance. With the result, Galo ends the tournament in 11th place, with 48 points, and ensures its presence in the 2026 Copa Sudamericana. The Rio team finishes in 14th, with 45 points.
The game’s script was clear from the first minutes: with Vasco playing with its reserve team, Atlético was dominant. The team from Minas Gerais piled up shots (10 against just 1 from Vasco), created three great chances and even hit two balls on the post, with Hulk. The intensity and constant presence in the offensive field left the Belo Horizonte team in total control of the match.
The superiority was reflected in the score. Junior Alonso opened the scoring after an assist from Rony. Shortly afterwards, Hulk added a free kick, consolidating the black and white’s dominance in the first stage.
The scenario for Vasco, which was already complicated, became even worse in the 31st minute, when midfielder Hugo Moura was sent off after a harsh challenge in midfield. With one more and supported by a confident performance, Atlético returned to the second half with even more freedom.
If Atlético had already shown supremacy in the first half, in the second the team only confirmed the technical difference between the two sides. With an impressive 72% of ball possession in the final stage and 9 shots on target, Sampaoli’s team turned volume into goals.
Dudu scored twice, demonstrating opportunism and good finishing to push the net and expand the score even further. The fifth goal came from an unfortunate move by full-back Victor Luís, who ended up deflecting it against his own team.
The victory guaranteed Atlético’s place in the Copa Sudamericana. Vasco ends the Brasileirão outside the group of teams that will compete in the “Sula”, but still competing in the Copa do Brasil, where they are in the semi-finals and face Fluminense.
