PRAGUE – Wrestler Miroslav Zeman, bronze medalist from the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, died last Thursday at the age of 79.
The Czech Wrestling Association announced on social networks the death of the former representative in the Greco-Roman style, who was inducted into the domestic Hall of Fame in October this year.
The six-time Czech champion in the 52kg flyweight experienced his international peak at the Olympics in Mexico, where he claimed four victories before losing to German Rolf Lacour and then overall winner Petar Kirov of Bulgaria. He also started four years later in Munich, where he finished fourth.
Zeman also took part in the World Championships twice and finished sixth in Bucharest in 1967. Out of five starts at the European championships, his best result was the last one in 1973 in Helsinki, where he took fifth place. Shortly thereafter, he ended his career for health reasons.
“Miroslav Zeman has long contributed to the development and support of wrestling in the Czech Republic. In him, Czech wrestling has lost a man who devoted a large part of his life, energy and heart to it,” said the union.
