Andy Carroll: Prison Sentence Risk Explained

Andy Carrol will appear in an English court on Tuesday for alleged breach of a protection order. The former Liverpool and Newcastle striker, who played for Bordeaux, risks prison.

Andy Carroll soon in prison? According to The Telegraph, the former Liverpool and Newcastle striker faces a prison sentence for breaching a protection order, issued to protect victims of domestic violence. He will appear before Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old, who has nine caps for the England team (2 goals), now plays for Dagenham & Redbridge (English sixth division), after his stint with the Girondins de Bordeaux during the 2024-25 season. The striker was arrested in April upon his return from France, the alleged offense having been committed in March.

Up to five years in prison

The British daily reported earlier this month that a former Premier League player had been arrested at the airport upon his return to the United Kingdom. Essex Police have since confirmed that it was Carroll, without elaborating on the alleged incident: “A man has been charged with breaching a protection order. Andrew Carroll, 36, from Epping, was arrested on April 27 and the alleged offense relates to an incident in March. He is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on December 30.”

A protection order is a court injunction typically issued to prevent one person from communicating with another, and may also prohibit a person from coming within a certain distance of a specific address or place of employment. Under UK law, breaching a protection order can be punishable by up to five years in prison in the most serious cases.
