Alpine World Cup
Dampener for German ski aces – Shiffrin furious again
The end of the year is disappointing for Lena Dürr and Emma Aicher. After a first run full of failures, US star Mikaela Shiffrin races to her fifth victory in the fifth slalom of the season.
The year ended with disappointment for the German skiing hopes Lena Dürr and Emma Aicher. Dürr took 17th place when US star Mikaela Shiffrin won the night slalom in Semmering, while Aicher was eliminated in the first round after a driving error.
The race on the Zauberberg was the last before the turn of the year. On January 3rd and 4th, the Alpine aces continue with the World Cup in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. There, Dürr and Aicher, who have both already achieved slalom podium places this season, want to gain new momentum for the big highlight: the Olympic Winter Games in Italy in February.
Slalom queen Shiffrin continues to be flawless
Meanwhile, Shiffrin continues to be in top form – especially in the slalom. For the 30-year-old, it was the fifth victory in the fifth race of the season in her flagship discipline. In the final, she raced from fourth place to the top and won by nine hundredths of a second ahead of world champion Camille Rast from Switzerland. Lara Colturi, who competed for Albania, came third.
The race was marked by an extremely large number of failures – especially in the first round, in which just 40 of 79 starters made it to the finish line on the rapidly fading slope. The third German athlete, Jessica Hilzinger, was also eliminated. Dürr said after the first run that the conditions were very different and each gate had to be driven a little differently.
In the final, the 34-year-old wanted to work her way up from twelfth place, but never really got into the rhythm and ultimately fell back.
