Within the scope of the investigation, the detention order for sports commentator and former referee Ahmet Çakar, one of the suspects, was lifted on the grounds of heart disease, and the police were instructed to be present at the courthouse according to Çakar’s health condition after his treatment. After completing his treatment at the hospital, Çakar recently came to the Istanbul Palace of Justice in Çağlayan to give a statement to the Prosecutor’s Office. After his statement, Çakar was released on the condition that a judicial control measure was imposed in the form of a ‘ban on going abroad’.
On the other hand, Çakar’s statement to the Prosecutor’s Office was revealed. In his statement, Çakar said that he worked as a referee between 1980-1998 and that he was a FIFA licensed referee between 1992-1998 and said, “I have a membership in one of the legal betting sites. Apart from this, I may have been a member of other legal betting sites, although I do not remember the exact date. I can’t remember which betting sites I have a membership to right now because I played very small amounts on these accounts a long time ago. I do not have an illegal betting account. I have never bet illegally in my life. “If I were to play, I wouldn’t have a membership to legal betting sites,” he said.
Asked by the prosecutor’s office whether he had any previous knowledge or information about the matches he bet on, Çakar said, “I am definitely against match-fixing. As a matter of fact, I have always talked about the match-fixing offer I received on television in the past, that is, in 1993. The matches I bet on are usually international matches. In the matches I bet on, I bet on over-under goals rather than the outcome of the match. I usually bet on European teams and European matches. I have placed minimum bets on the leagues played in our country. I have no direct knowledge of match-fixing or match betting. “Only when I got worried about some matches, so to speak, did I comment on sports programs that some things were abnormal, but I have no direct observation or knowledge about them,” he replied.
Explaining that the mobile phone could not be found during the searches and that it was later seized in a broken state, Çakar continued: “I was eating out one day before I was taken into custody. I came home at 1 o’clock in the morning. When the police came in the morning, I told them that I didn’t know where my phone was. I even told the police that it might be in my car. When I roughly checked my car, I saw that there was no phone. Meanwhile, the police were with me. When my lawyer entered my house to get clothes while I was in custody, he found my mobile phone broken next to my car. My lawyer answered the phone. The phone was on for 20 minutes. Then the phone turned off automatically. According to my lawyer, it was unusable. I have no information about the fate of the phone. He either stayed in the hospital or got lost. I’m currently using the phone my sister gave me. I don’t have that phone with me right now. I did not bet except on legal betting sites. “I do not accept the accusations made against me,” he said.
