AFC Nations League: New Competition Launch

He added: “The AFC remains focused on providing high-quality and consistent development paths for its member associations, in line with its long-term vision to advance football in Asia. Effectively utilizing the international match windows approved by FIFA is facing increasing challenges, as a result of the limited availability of competitors, high operational costs, and the complexities of logistical aspects, which often leads to a reduction in the sporting value of international matches.”

He added: “These challenges have highlighted the need for a more organised, predictable and sustainable competition framework at the national team level. After conducting a comprehensive internal review and extensive consultation process, the AFC decided in principle to launch an Asian Nations League. The proposed tournament aims to ensure regular and valuable international matches during international match windows, enhance competitive balance through level-based matches, improve cost efficiency through central coordination, and provide clear progression paths for the national teams.”

Commenting on this initiative, Datuk Seri Windsor John, Secretary General of the AFC, said: The AFC Nations League represents an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to supporting the development of the 47 member associations. By offering a structured competitive platform during international match windows, with greater stability in the calendar and clear sporting incentives, we aim to ensure regular access to high-quality matches, while addressing the logistical and cost challenges faced by national teams.

He added: In addition to the sporting benefits, we have also witnessed strong interest and increasing demand from our commercial partners in a Nations League tournament, which reflects its appeal to fans, media and stakeholders alike, and its ability to provide a more exciting and marketable international football product.

The AFC concluded its statement by saying: “More details regarding the tournament system, schedule, and implementation mechanisms will be discussed through the relevant committees in the federation and the consultations of the various parties, and will be announced at the appropriate time.”
