2026 World Cup Podcast: Football & Politics

Die New York Times saw a “carnival of foreign shame” and in fact football may have reached a low point when the 2026 World Cup draw takes place in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Fifa President Gianni Infantino behaved so humbly towards Donald Trump, so absurd did the handing over of a peace prize newly created by the world association to the US President seem during a bizarre show that was actually supposed to be about the draw of group opponents.

What conclusions can be drawn from this for this World Cup, which will be an XXL format tournament with 48 teams and 104 games? How does the DFB behave? How might the general conditions affect the German national team – and what expectations can be placed on the DFB team? Moderator Anna Dreher discusses these and other questions in the new episode of “And Now to Sport” with sports policy expert Johannes Aumüller and SZ football boss Christof Kneer.
