In the prestigious sports city of Sangju, badminton, the national sport, is competing for national team selection.

Sangju City is holding the ‘2026 Badminton National Team Selection Tournament’ in the new and old buildings of Sangju Indoor Gymnasium for 7 days from the 21st to the 27th.

This tournament is hosted by the Korea Badminton Association and organized by the Sangju Badminton Association.

115 players from all over the country are participating, and 7 each in the men’s and women’s singles and 12 each in the men’s and women’s doubles are selected for the national team.

However, Korea’s leading badminton star Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) and top-ranked player Shim Yu-jin (Incheon International Airport Skymons) are selected first for the national team and, unfortunately, are not participating in this selection match.

Se-young Ahn won the women’s singles at the 2025 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Finals held in Hangzhou, China on the 21st, opening the era of $1 million in single-season prize money for the first time in history.

Sangju Mayor Kang Young-seok said, “We are honored to welcome national team candidates to Sangju who will raise the status of Korean badminton around the world,” and added, “We will spare no effort in providing administrative support so that all players can play in the best condition.”

Prior to this tournament, Sangju City hosted a summer training camp for national badminton team candidates last August, and about 60 coaches and players stayed for two weeks and used lodging and restaurants in the area, which is evaluated as contributing to the revitalization of the local commercial district.
