RIYADH (Reuters) – The final of the women’s tennis tour season, the WTA Finals, was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the 8th, with sixth seed Elena Rubakina (Kazakhstan) winning her first singles title at the tournament.
Rubakina defeated top-seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 7-6 to win her third title of the season. “It’s been an unbelievable week. I never expected a result like this,” she said, and also praised Sabalenka, who was ranked No. 1 in the world rankings for the second year in a row.
Sabalenka praised Rubakina’s win, saying, “It wasn’t my best performance, but you were definitely better.” Sabalenka defeated Rubakina in the 2023 Australian Open final.
Four Grand Slam champions participated in this tournament, but the final winner was Lubakina, who had never made it to the quarterfinals in any of the Grand Slam tournaments this season and was the last of the contestants to qualify.
