Djokovic Wins Athens: Focus Shifts to Turin Qualification

Novak Djokovic enjoyed the premiere of the 250 in Athens

There you go: At the very last opportunity of the year, Novak Djokovic was allowed to play against an opponent from the top ten outside of the Grand Slam tournaments in the 2025 season. The fact that it was Lorenzo Musetti against whom the Serbian grandmaster had a record of 8:1 before the final in Athens didn’t make things much more difficult.

Musetti started better and quickly took a 2-1 lead with a break. The Italian carried this through to winning the set. In the second set things quickly went in the direction of the 24-time Grand Slam champion. And when Djokovic was ahead with an early break in the third set, it looked like the favorite was going through. But Lorenzo Musetti didn’t give up yet and managed the comeback to make it 3-3. And another to make it 5:5.

But Djokovic didn’t let up and took Musetti’s serve again to make it 6:5. And then the New Athens player managed to keep a clean sheet after just under three hours of play.

With the coup in Athens, Novak Djokovic now has 101 career titles. In the all-time list, Nole has made up further ground on Roger Federer (103 championships) and record holder Jimmy Connors (109).

Djokovic will not start in Turin in 2024

For Lorenzo Musetti it would have been only the third title. But certainly the most important. Only in this way would the Italian, who had to fend off a match point in the semifinals against Sebastian Korda, have secured a place at the ATP Finals. That now goes to Félix Auger-Aliassime, who slides into the group with Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton.

Novak Djokovic was drawn into a group with Carlos Alcaraz, Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz. But it has still not been clearly stated whether it will even start. In any case, Djokovic skipped Turin last year.
