The series produced by started out as a very successful product two years ago Netflix about the NBA world, “Starting 5”. The series aimed to follow 5 prominent players of the American League with interviews and cameras throughout the season, revealing their behind-the-scenes stories, the joys and insecurities of the champions. Given the success of the first season, Netflix renewed it for a second, but that’s when the ratings started to drop. For this reason the famous streaming platform has decided to cancel the series, which will therefore not return for a third season.
Il benchmark of Starting 5 was the series “Quarterback”also produced by Netflix but in collaboration with the NFL. After a positive first season, especially thanks to the choice of the 5 protagonists (LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum and Domantas Sabonis), the ratings however suffered a setback perhaps due to the less interesting 5 stars of the second season, namely Kevin Durant, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Haliburton and James Harden. Probably not popular enough names despite the producers having had the stroke of luck to organize the season in the year of the MVP and the victory of the SGA title and the ride to the Finals of the Haliburton Pacers.
The comparison with the NFL’s competition has been merciless for the NBA, which is why Netflix made this decision.
