National Racket Sports Association: Progress & Plans

Senegal’s Racket Sports Aim for National Cohesion and Future champions

Dakar, Senegal – In a strategic move to bolster the advancement and unity of racket sports across the nation, the Senegalese Badminton Federation (FESBAD) has announced the forthcoming establishment of a national racket sports association. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Senegalese Table Tennis Federation, aims to cultivate a more robust and cohesive sporting landscape.

Antoine Diandy, president of FESBAD, articulated the vision behind this aspiring project. The objective is to create a national racket sports association which will crisscross the country in order to strengthen the policy of development and cohesion around these disciplines. He added, Tomorrow, we will perhaps not be at the same level as football or wrestling, but we will be able to produce champions.

This declaration came during FESTIBAD SENEGAL 2026, a significant sporting event organized by FESBAD this past weekend. The festival, held in partnership with the Table Tennis Federation, was designed to invigorate the practice of both badminton and table tennis.

The Léopold Sédar Senghor stadium served as the venue for FESTIBAD, which also benefited from the support of the world Badminton Federation and Olympic Solidarity. This collaboration underscores the growing international recognition and support for racket sports development in Senegal.

Diandy emphasized the importance of accessibility and possibility for young athletes nationwide. Young people from the regions of Kaffrine, Sédhiou, Ziguinchor or Tambacounda must have the chance to know and practice badminton, an Olympic discipline since 1992. This commitment to regional outreach is crucial for identifying and nurturing talent beyond the capital.

beyond the competitive aspect, FESTIBAD served as a platform for fostering broader values. This festival allows us, beyond sporting practice, to develop other Olympic, civic and patriotic values. The sporting world is a vector of cohesion and we took the opportunity to make table tennis part of this dynamic, Diandy explained. This holistic approach aligns with the understanding that sports can be powerful tools for social integration and character development, much like how youth basketball leagues in American communities often serve as hubs for social interaction and skill-building.

Badminton has seen a steady rise in popularity in Senegal over the last decade, with a formal structure established in 2020 to spearhead its nationwide growth. This dedicated focus is notably timely as badminton is one of the 25 competitive sports slated for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, scheduled to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026. The inclusion of badminton in such a prestigious event offers a tangible goal and a significant platform for Senegalese athletes.

The creation of a unified racket sports association could offer several benefits. By pooling resources and expertise, FESBAD and the Table Tennis Federation can streamline training programs, enhance coaching development, and create more consistent competition schedules. This could lead to a more efficient pathway for athletes to reach elite levels, potentially mirroring the success seen in countries where strong national federations have consistently produced world-class talent in sports like tennis or table tennis.

While the ambition to rival established sports like football and wrestling is long-term, the immediate focus on development and cohesion is a pragmatic and achievable goal. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other emerging sports in Senegal, demonstrating how strategic partnerships and a commitment to grassroots development can yield significant results.

Further examination could explore the specific strategies the new association plans to implement for talent identification in remote regions, the potential for public-private partnerships to fund infrastructure development, and the long-term economic impact of fostering professional athletes in these disciplines.
