After the victory of Lille and the new defeat of OGC Nice, the 5th day of the league phase of the Europa League continued with nine matches scheduled for 9 p.m. Winner of its first three matches but defeated in Seville on the previous day, Olympique Lyonnais traveled to Serbia this Thursday evening to challenge the Israelis of Maccabi Tel-Aviv, still looking for their first victory in this campaign. A perilous journey to Backa Topola for Paulo Fonseca’s men, determined to hang on to the lead car. For this meeting, the Rhone residents, deprived of Mata, Fofana, Ghezzal or even Nuamah, presented themselves in 3-5-2 with an offensive duo composed of Sulc and Satriano. An important meeting which started perfectly for Les Gones.
OL play in Serbia
Diligent and very serious in the first moments, the Lyonnais quickly found the fault. On a cross from De Carvalho, Tolisso came up against Mishpati at 5m50 but Abner finished at the far post in the empty goal (0-1, 4th). Ideally launched, OL still had a little scare after a ball from Tolisso but Peretz did not fit (13th). In the process, Satriano, still found in the area, did not get his head on target (15th). In control and superior to his evening opponent, the current 7th in Ligue 1 continued his business and logically made the break. Already threatening a few minutes earlier, Tolisso, served by Abner, doubled the lead with a header (0-2, 25th). KO standing, Maccabi saw this evening turn a little more into a nightmare when Varela, injured, had to give way to Sagiv Shalom Jehezkel.
In demonstration, OL were still exultant in the following sequence… Held in the opponent’s area, Sulc obtained a penalty, which Niakhaté transformed without trembling (0-3, 35th). Just before the break, Davida tried to wake up her team but the Israeli winger was blocked (43rd). A timid offensive which however changed nothing in the appearance of this meeting. In an armchair, OL took advantage of the weakness of Maccabi Tel-Aviv and played their football. When we returned from the locker room, the show continued. In a new school action, Sulc found Tolisso who took over perfectly at the far post (0-4, 51st). Author of a double, the captain of the Gones even saw a triple in stride on a new service from… Sulc (0-5, 53rd). A historic evening allowing Paulo Fonseca to manage his squad. Omnipresent in this meeting, Sulc and Tolisso gave way to Merah and Karabec. Coaching paid off since barely entering the game, the first served the second for the 6th goal of the match (0-6, 62nd).
Stuttgart and Nottingham Forest reposition themselves
In the last half hour, OL calmly managed their lead against the Israelis who were completely overwhelmed and reduced to ten at the very end of the match. The young Barisic, Gonçalves and Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez also appeared but the scoreboard no longer evolved. No matter, with this XXL success (6-0), OL are back on track perfectly before challenging Nantes, this Sunday, during the 14th day of Ligue 1. Among the other matches of the evening, Stuttgart had a second success in a row against the Dutch Go Ahead Eagles (4-0). Loser of OL during the previous day, Real Betis also confirmed (2-1) against FC Utrecht. On the pitch of Racing Genk, Basel lost (1-2).
Note, finally, the victories of Bologna against Slazburg (4-1), Nottingham Forest against Malmö (3-0), Red Star Belgrade, numerically inferior for more than an hour of play against FCSB (1-0) and Panathinaikos (2-1) against Sturm Graz. In the standings, OL now occupy first place, tied on points with Midtjylland, second, and Aston Villa, third, but with a better goal difference. For the rest, Real Betis is 5th. Nottingham Forest moved up to 16th place, as did Stuttgart, now 12th. For its part, Lille, clear winner of Dinamo Zagreb, occupies 11th place, far from OGC Nice, bottom after five days…
