If her dream was to compete in a Pan-American tournament, even a world one, BUAP student Evelyn Katy Sotarriba Sánchez more than achieved it. The three-time champion in Olympic wrestling, in three consecutive years of the National Universiade, was crowned with gold in the FISU AMERICA Combat Sportwhich brought together university athletes from all over the continent in Lima, Peru, in the disciplines of Olympic wrestling, taekwondo, wushu, judo and karate.
Five fights against two Peruvian opponents earned him gold in the first edition of the FISU AMERICA Combat Sportin which she considers that concentration and self-confidence, but above all her technique, were the key to success. Skills and values in which his coach Jorge Rosas has been fundamental.
In that tournament, which was held from October 24 to November 1, the Maximum House of Studies in Puebla was also represented with two other outstanding athletes: Jatzidi Onei Oliveros Juárez, from the Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, and Luna Andrea Montiel López, from the Bachelor’s degree in Communication, who brought home three bronze medals in taekwondo.
Evelyn, Exampley, Sports Discipline and Academic
Holder of 45 medals in Olympic wrestling, most of them gold and silver, Evelyn Sotarriba Sánchez, a ninth-semester student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at the BUAP and three-time champion in this discipline, in the women’s -50 kilogram category, 2023, 2024 and 2025 editions of the National Universiade, is preparing for her next tournament: the 2026 National Universiade.
Losing her first competition, at a young age – she started training at the age of 9 – inspired her to improve herself in the oldest sport of the Olympic Games. “I had a lot of nerves, but losing gave me the drive to know that I was made for this.”
This trajectory was not always linear. His participation in state, national and international competitions is the result of his sporting discipline and the drive of his coach, a key piece in his career.
“There were many obstacles, because it is believed that a woman is not made for a combat sport; but my sporting career has been worth it. I have had losses, but the will of those who believe in me has been the basis for not giving up, and my coach has always believed in me.”
The student from the Faculty of Psychology, with an average of 9.3, affirms that study and sports can go hand in hand. Therefore, his next goal is to specialize in Sports Psychology, an area of knowledge that provides elements for the stability and mental health of athletes.

Jatzidi Onei Oliveros Juárez, a ninth semester student in Biotechnology at the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the BUAP, participated in the FISU AMERICA Combat Sports 2025, in Lima, Peru, where he obtained two bronze medals in taekwondo, one in traditional poomsae and another in freestyle poomsae.
He obtained the pass to compete in this international meeting after participating in the 2025 National Universiade, where he won the silver medal; and in the international competition in Lima, the first in which he participated outside the country, he faced university students from Costa Rica, Peru and Chile.
Jatzidi Onei Oliveros, who has been practicing taekwondo since he was five years old, thanked the university, the Rector Lilia Cedillo, the coaches and teachers for the support. He said that the support and impulse given to sport in this administration stands out from other administrations.
For her part, Luna Andrea Montiel López, a student in the third semester of the Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences, obtained a bronze in the discipline of taekwondo in the FISU AMERICA Combat Sports 2025, facing Brazil and Ecuador, thanks to the gold he obtained in the last National Universiade in the combat category.
Andrea Montiel says that this sport, which she has practiced since she was six years old, has given her the security and discipline necessary to focus on her goals. He also thanked the institution for its support because his expenses to participate in this competition were covered by the institution, which he proudly represents.
