Jannik Sinner secured the title at the highly prized Six Kings Slam invitational tennis tournament.
The second in the world rankings prevailed in the final on Saturday in Riyadh against the top-ranked Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz 6:2,6:4. The South Tyrolean won 4.5 million US dollars (3.85 million euros) for winning the tournament. Like each of the six top players invited, he had already pocketed $1.5 million (1.28 million euros) from his initial fee.
For the 24-year-old, it was only the second win from the last nine duels with the 22-year-old Alcaraz. Previously, he had only won against Alcaraz in this year’s Wimbledon final during this period.
Kritik an Six Kings Slam
At the Six Kings Slam there are no world ranking points, no important titles, no reputation to be won – but there is a lot of money. The games were broadcast by the streaming giant Netflix, which also created new marketing opportunities.
For critics, the tournament is also part of so-called sportswashing, with which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia wants to distract from its violations of human rights and improve its image.
