Charming, sensitive, a great baseball player, Robert Redford had something more: that rare civil conscience – anything but taken for granted among Hollywood stars – which allowed him to never lose the sense of reality, the passion for just battles and attention towards “common people”, to quote the title of the film with which he won the Oscar for director in 1980. A charismatic actor and director of profound humanity, Redford was able to combine beauty and commitment, elegance and moral restlessness, transforming every role and every project into a gesture of civil responsibility. Behind the star’s smile, there was the man who believed in the power of cinema as an instrument of truth, denunciation and change.
