Shots Fired Near Puerto Rico Coliseum Ahead of NBA Preseason & Celebrity Hoops!

San Juan, PR – October 3, 2025 – The vibrant atmosphere surrounding the upcoming NBA preseason clash between the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic, along with a star-studded celebrity basketball game, was regrettably marred by a shooting incident near the iconic Puerto Rico Coliseum (Coliseo de Puerto Rico). Police are now ramping up security measures to ensure the safety of fans and participants.

The incident, which occured before major basketball events were set to take place, resulted in approximately twenty broken windows and some damage to a wall. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Police Superintendent Joseph González assured the public that the area around the Coliseum will see increased patrols, surveillance, and enhanced resources. We know that both visitors and residents of Puerto Rico, fans and relatives of the players have plans to enjoy the activities of this weekend in Choli, and that incidents such as this morning can influence when deciding to attend or not, González stated.

The Coliseo de Puerto Rico, a legendary venue that recently hosted a massive 31-night residency for global superstar Bad Bunny, is gearing up for a packed weekend of basketball action. Friday night will feature a celebrity game showcasing former athletes and artists, followed by Saturday night’s highly anticipated NBA preseason matchup.

The shooting, carried out by six individuals on motorcycles, led to the cancellation of a press conference scheduled for Friday morning.Police are actively investigating the scene, collecting evidence, and exploring all potential motives.

I can guarantee that the puerto Rico Police has taken all the measures so that these events flow in the safest and calm way possible, González emphasized. He added that no resources have been spared in ensuring security for the events and in investigating the incident.

Verónica Ferraiuoli, executive director of the Convention Center District Authority, confirmed that access to the interior of the venue will remain restricted until authorities conclude their investigation. Our priority is to guarantee the safety of all visitors, artists, athletes and personnel who enter and trust our enclosures, she said.

This isn’t the first time the Coliseum has been targeted. In 2019, a similar shooting incident left several windows shattered. At that time, the venue was hosting concerts by Daddy Yankee, with urban artist Anuel AA as a guest. Speculation at the time suggested the attack might have been a protest against Anuel AA’s performance, and his confirmed participation in the upcoming celebrity game has inevitably fueled similar theories this time around.

Superintendent González acknowledged that multiple theories are being considered regarding the motivations and perpetrators of the shooting. He is not responsible for my specular part and talking about any publicly, until the investigation concludes, he stated, underscoring the need for a thorough and conclusive investigation before drawing public conclusions.
