In a development that has sent ripples through the sports community,a former striker for the Jelgava hockey club “Zemgale”/LBTU,identified as Zelta,has been handed a stern legal judgment by the Kurzeme District Court.The ruling,which has now entered into force,stems from Zelta’s refusal to undergo testing for narcotic or other intoxicating substances after being caught driving. The consequences are ample: a 140-hour community service sentence and a five-year ban from driving.

The Optibet Hockey League (OHL) club, where zelta previously played, is also feeling the repercussions.The team has been fined 17,000 euros, a significant financial blow that underscores the seriousness of the situation. The legal proceedings have been lengthy. LETA reported that the criminal case against Zelta was heard by the Kurzeme District Court on December 5, 2024. While the Kurzeme Regional Court upheld the initial judgment earlier this year, a further appeal was lodged with the Supreme Court.Though, the Supreme Court ultimately declined to initiate cassation proceedings, cementing the Kurzeme District Court’s decision and bringing the legal saga to a close.

The prosecution’s case detailed that Zelta was operating a vehicle that had been suspended. When apprehended by police officers, he was taken to the Riga Psychiatry and Narcology Center, where he refused to submit to tests designed to detect the presence of narcotic, psychotropic, toxic, or other intoxicating substances. This refusal formed the crux of the legal judgment against him.
