The International Tennis Hall of Fame is set to announce its newest inductees, with tennis titans Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro leading the nominations. However, the inclusion of Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova has sparked considerable discussion, not only due to her impressive career achievements but also because of her outspoken political views.
Kuznetsova, a formidable force in women’s tennis, boasts an impressive resume: two Grand Slam singles titles, two more in doubles, and three Fed Cup victories. Yet, her public persona has been significantly shaped by her vocal admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a past interview, when asked who she would be if she could be someone else, Kuznetsova famously replied, “Vladimir Putin, simply because I wonder how it works there.” This sentiment was echoed at the Australian Open, where she expressed a desire for a selfie with Putin, whom she considers Russia’s greatest asset.
Her political stance has also drawn criticism from within the tennis community.Notably, two years prior, Kuznetsova clashed with Czech tennis star Petra kvitova, who had advocated for Russian and Belarusian players to be barred from the Olympic Games following the invasion of Ukraine. Kuznetsova countered by stating, “She is a Czech and like all Czechs are against the Russians. Propaganda and Rusophobia are being grown there, just like around the world. Athletes should not be dragged into it.” She further argued,”I understand if politicians played tennis, but like that? In that case,we should discuss all war conflicts around the world and their influence on sport.” As the conflict began, russian and Belarusian players have competed without national designations, their rankings reflecting this change.
The path to Hall of Fame enshrinement requires a candidate to secure at least 75 percent of the votes from the election committee, with additional points awarded from fan ballots. The official declaration of the 2024 class is anticipated in november.
