Aizkolaris Championship: Iker vicente Eyes Third Consecutive Title in Basque Wood Chopping Showdown

The Gurea fronton in Azkoitia is set to host a thrilling conclusion to the Euskadi First Class Aizkolaris Championship this Sunday at 12:00 PM. All eyes will be on Iker Vicente, the reigning champion and current dominant force in this demanding sport, as he aims to secure his third consecutive txapela (championship hat).

Vicente, hailing from Navarre, faces stiff competition from a talented field of Gipuzkoan athletes. Alongside him in the final are Hodei Ezpeleta, known as ‘Bihurri’, Julen Alberdi (‘Txikia IV’), Mikel Larrañaga, Xabier Zaldua, and julen Gabirondo. These six elite aizkolaris will battle it out by expertly felling twelve logs: four oinbikos (large logs), four 60-inch pieces, and four kanaerdikos (medium-sized logs).

The championship final was officially presented on Tuesday evening in the Oteiza hall of Azkoitia’s Elkargunea. The event saw the presence of Azkoitia’s mayor, Ana Azkoitia, the president of the Basque Federation, Igor Duñabeitia, and the six competing aizkolaris, underscoring the importance of this conventional Basque sport.

Iker Vicente, widely considered the favorite, described the final as the great event of the year. He expressed confidence in his ability to add another txapela but acknowledged that a tough competition is expected. His primary challenger is anticipated to be Hodei Ezpeleta, who was the champion in 2022 and secured a second-place finish in the Doneztebe eliminatory event just a month ago. This sets up a compelling rematch between two of the sport’s top contenders.

for Julen Alberdi, or ‘Txikia IV’, this final holds particular significance as he competes on home turf. He conveyed his excitement about performing well in front of his countrymen, stating, I’m not in my best moment but I’ve come away happy from the last training sessions I’ve done. Mikel Larrañaga, representing Azpeitia, also expressed his eagerness to compete.While admitting he’s currently performing at 70%, he hopes to do a good job. The remaining two contenders, Xabier Zaldua and Julen Gabirondo, both hail from Gipuzkoa, with Zaldua from Zumarraga and Gabirondo from Urnieta.
