F1 Singapore GP: Cooling Jackets for Extreme Heat

Despite the night sessions, the weather forecast speak of temperatures above 31 ° C and humidity around 90%. Required refrigerant kits on the single -seater, jackets no: but who will run without having a ballast of 0.5 kg on the machine

The Singapore 2025 GP is already in the history of Formula 1, regardless of what happened on the track. For the Asian race – characterized by high temperatures and extreme humidity – the FIA has declared “hot risk conditions” for the first time, thus authorizing the use of the refrigerant system for pilots during all sessions on the track. The forecasts, despite the night sessions, give temperatures above 31 ° C with humidity around 90%, so the race director, Rui Marques, took the first official measure. The cooling kit to be used inside the passenger compartment, available from the beginning of the season but never needed so far, provides for a system on the single -seater and a jacket for the pilots. This year the use of the vest is at the discretion of those who go down on the track when the temperatures exceed 31 ° C, while the “air conditioning” system in Singapore will be mandatory for all cars. The pilots who decide to take to the track without refrigerant jacket, however, must have a 0.5 kg ballast on the car: many had complained in the past of the fact that wearing the jacket inside the passenger compartment was extremely uncomfortable for the already small size of the cockpit. In any case, in the regulation, we read: “In this circumstance, all the other components, including the refrigerant fluid of the pilot cooling system, must be installed. Furthermore, the mass difference between the personal equipment normally used and any element of the personal equipment that is part of the system must be compensated with the addition of 0.5 kg of ballast in the passenger compartment”.

F1 cooling kit

Mindful of what happened during the Qatar Grand Prix in 2023, when some pilots resorted to medical care after the race, the Federation started working on a refrigerant system and a cooling mounted on the single -seater. The refrigerant vest for pilots approved by the F1 Commission includes a fireproof shirt with about 50 meters of pipes that surround the pilot’s chest and back. These pompan tubes of the cooled fluid, preserved in a special box that houses a microprocessor and the technology necessary to keep the temperatures low.
