Badminton Row Interval Changes: DGI & Badminton Denmark

The landscape of youth badminton rankings is shifting, with DGI and Badminton Denmark implementing key adjustments to their ranking intervals. These changes, effective from the next registration deadline on Thursday, November 6th, and impacting tournaments from Week 47 onwards, aim to create more balanced competition and smoother player growth pathways.

For young athletes in the U9 category, a significant transition is underway. The U9C division will now move to the U11C (formerly U11B) bracket. This strategic move is designed to offer U9 players a more conducive environment for progression into the U11 age group, potentially reducing the pressure of a steep jump in competition level.

This U9 adjustment necessitates a ripple effect within the U11 divisions. The transition points between U11C and U11B have been recalibrated. the new threshold for boys moving from U11C to U11B is now 1275 points, and for girls, it’s 1175 points. While this may allow some current U11B players to drop back into U11C,the option to remain in U11B is still available for those who prefer it. Additionally, the buffer zones within the U11 age categories have been tightened, though these changes are not expected to directly impact initial tournament registrations.

In the U13 boys’ U13A category, the qualification points have been nudged upwards. The benchmark to achieve U13A status for boys is now 1375 points, a slight increase from the previous 1350 points. This adjustment is a direct response to the U13A division becoming “a little too big and thus also more uneven,” according to officials. The aim is to create a more competitive and consistent U13A field, though players who previously qualified for U13A can still opt to play in that division.

Significant adjustments have also been made for girls in the U17M and U19M categories. The points required to qualify for U17M or U19M status for girls has been lowered by 50 points, now standing at 1750 points (down from 1800). This change is expected to bring approximately ten more female players into the U17M series from the next registration period. The rationale behind this move is to address a “very small U17M range for the girls,” ensuring a healthier player pool.

Further refinements are evident in the U13M girls’ rankings. The “M” series now encompasses players ranked 1 through 24, an expansion from the previous 1-20 range. Correspondingly, the buffer zone for these players will now cover ranks 25 through 48, up from 21-40. This adjustment is intended to better align the number of players with the scheduling of two U13M tournaments offered in the west and east regions.

Similarly, the U13M boys’ buffer zone has been expanded. It now covers ranks 33 through 64, an increase from the previous 33-56 range. This change mirrors the girls’ U13M adjustment, aiming to synchronize player numbers with the availability of two U13M tournaments in the west and east.

these strategic ranking adjustments reflect a commitment to fostering fair play and optimal development within Danish youth badminton. By fine-tuning the entry points and player distribution across various divisions, organizers are striving to ensure that competition remains engaging and that players are placed in categories that best suit their current skill level and developmental stage.
