In a bizarre turn of events that sounds like it might very well be ripped from a sports drama, the brother of a celebrated Olympic gold medalist has been handed a meaningful ban for attempting to uncover alleged doping by a fellow champion. Giacomo Tortu, brother of Filippo Tortu – a key member of Italy’s surprise 4x100m relay gold medal-winning team at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics – has been suspended for three years by the Italian Athletics Federation (Fidal).
Giacomo Tortu, who has a background as an athlete himself and currently leads the Milan Raptors club, reportedly hired a private detective agency in an effort to access the personal data of double Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs. The motive, according to Italian media reports, was to find evidence that Jacobs had engaged in doping practices. This clandestine operation has resulted in two separate suspensions for Giacomo Tortu.
The primary suspension,issued by fidal,spans 30 months. It cites “the violation of respect and observation of federal statutory and regulatory rules, as well as the principles of loyalty, integrity, sporting fairness and discipline which constitute the foundations of sport.” This highlights a severe breach of the ethical code expected within the sport.
