This is another hard blow for the San Francisco 49ers who have definitely not been spared for several seasons. The heart of the 49ers defense, Fred Warner, will not play again this 2025 season after a serious ankle injury suffered against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At the end of the meeting, Kyle Shanahan confirmed the worst fears: the linebacker suffered a fracture accompanied by a dislocation of the ankle, which will require surgery and ends his 2025 campaign.

A new cruel injury for the 49ers

The injury, which occurred at the start of the first quarter, moved teammates and opponents. On a run by Rachaad White, Warner saw his leg caught in unintentional contact with Ji’Ayir Brown. CBS only broadcast limited footage because the action was so impressive. The player left the field immobilized in a splint, visibly affected.

The timing of this injury is particularly cruel. Fred Warner was once again at the heart of the Californian defensive system. He already had more than 50 tackles, several passes defended and two forced fumbles this season. Since his arrival in 2018, he had only missed one game due to injury, and even played last year despite a broken ankle.

A decimated team

Without their defensive captain, the 49ers will have to reorganize. Tatum Bethune, who came into play after Warner’s exit, should see his role expand, alongside Dee Winters. But replacing a four-time All-Pro, a real metronome both in the ground game and in coverage, is a challenge.

San Francisco is already going through a period marked by absences: Brock Purdy, George Kittle and even Ricky Pearsall were not available during the defeat against Tampa Bay, not to mention injuries on the other side of the ball. With a 4-2 record, the franchise remains competitive, but the loss of Fred Warner probably represents one of the hardest blows suffered this year.

The rest of the season will tell whether the Californian defense can absorb such an earthquake. But one thing is certain: nothing will be spared for the 49ers in this nightmarish 2025 season from the point of view of the infirmary.
