World Change: Reflection Part 5

Last reflection on the world of basketball, journalism and communication And therefore the last opportunity to reconfirm, in the case of the writer, a certain fact that the field is clear from all kinds of doubt: I am not a professional journalist and what has been done in September 2016 with the creation of MEP was an adventure that began for pure passion and gradually continued with the desire to propose the best possible product on a competition like Euroleague, then in the face of a historical change.

And the last opportunity to clarify once again as I have never believed, and I will never believe, in the event that a simple card can give greater credibility than values such as seriousness and professionalism that go far beyond the framework in a profession. To say it all I have always thought that carrying out any activity with passion and balance is a characteristic that can accompany anyone starting from a humility that must nourish the desire to know and experience every day more.

Having said that, for days, in reality for many months, I ask myself several questions about the world of basketball, in particular the European one, the communication that concerns it and the journalism that trafficking it. There are many doubts, the certainties that more than something does not work decimated more, the scarce consideration of the work done perhaps the theme that exceeds everything with a thought that is the basis of everything: we are sure that what is produced is made in compliance with the fans, which are the readers, the only true indispensable component of all this world?

The NBA example: the great confusion between learning and copying

The NBA is the League to which the whole basketball world looksrightly given the caliber of the organization led by Adam Silver.

Whenever any bond proposes a path of growth and improvement we look beyond Ocean trying to bring situations that work perfectly to that world.

Small detail: the NBA is one thing, the rest of the world is light years awayat best.

Learning it is one thing, copying another slavish. Just study, analyze and evaluate how much reproducible, but to think of applying concepts that work there in a world that is totally different and with a largely more deficit organization from every point of view makes you smile a lot.

It is absolutely not necessary to bring everything here, because the shows of the Stark Arena, of Oaka, the Menora Mivtachim rather than the Piraeus or the Zalgiris Arena are part of our basketball heritage: don’t they like the NBA top? Who cares, in some ways we are these and it is on all this and from everything we have to start the work of development and dissemination. Studying and learning without distorting, having clearly clear where the deficit is enormous, or at a communicative level mainly.

The NBA is the largest example of communicative and organizational growth in the history of sport. And I deliberately did not insert the concept of technical growth because I am not at all certain that the strictly basketball product is better than that of the first part of the millennium and of the 80s and 90s. And precisely in that growth process, the NBA accepted and chosen that a basketball perhaps technically lower than the previous one was functional to the communicative diffusion.

Too brainy concept? Let me explain. In Europe, especially the insiders of the communication, they are very ready to analyze and celebrate every detail of the game of this or that coach, entering the detailed technical details. The highlights of a regular season game NBA, rich only in triples from their own home, of crazy crushes and of assists “no look” or behind their backs attract many more passionate, new or already faithful, of a timeout of the great European coach who draws perfect possession. Just ask a boy if you look at the Highlights NBA or those of Euroleague, LBA, Easy-Credit etc in the morning …

In the impossibility of proposing something technically comparable, therefore, the European world should instead move in the communicative direction that leads to greater involvement of the fans through a higher closeness to the protagonists. And it is sadly the opposite, as we have already had the opportunity to evaluate in the previous insights.

There are many examples that could be clarifiers of the problem. I remember well how in the races of the Covid period the press conferences of the NBA players were open remotely in order to involve as many actors as possible. One in particular, during Campazzo’s stay in Denver, lasted a life late in the evening because there were several Argentine journalists connected to asking multiple questions to Facu. The product that derived from it was journalistically very interesting as it gave ideas for reflection for different subsequent treatments.

I have to repeat myself, but why for example Eurolega does not “copy” that, opening the post -race press conferences remotely? It is one of the many things that the greatest European competition should do immediately, as from these pages listed months ago. I know dozens and dozens of journalists who would accredit with the consequence of providing A product that would be better than those very sad and unjustifiable mute scenes to which we assist weekly after the home press officer asks “Questions for the coach?” after the initial evaluation of the race by the same. And don’t tell me that it is difficult, because if this is the case it is better to close the shack and puppets.

Going further, do you know that it is easier to get the availability of a protagonist from an NBA team rather than from one of the Euroleague? There are rules of opening to the media that on paper would also be in these parts, however as already mentioned in these reflections, they are regularly disregarded without the club paying the consequences.

People are attracted to the words of the protagonists and also want to know the following characters, their idols, more deeply. Knowing if they love pizza or sushi more, what is the last film they have seen, which TV series follow, if they like more sea or mountains, for which football team they cheer … and very often it affects all this compared to blackboard themes because they bring these characters closer to “normal” people, if you pass the term. Other examples? One who jumps to my mind: do you remember LeBron’s Taco Tuesdays? Here, in fact, much more than many races spoke of it.

Finally, I believe that another key step is that concerning behaviors, especially extra field of many professionals, in particular coaches and managers. Continuing on the path of the arbitration complaint continues, of the preventive attempt to direct their choices even before the races, the absurd and unacceptable reactions of some managers is something that can no longer be seen or heard. They must be sanctioned, but hard, not with those four pennies subject to the ridiculous fines with respect to the gravity of the words expressed.

We have heard of the mafia, even of conditioning deriving from international politics, we are at the absurd. So we do only feed the culture of suspicion, one of the greatest evils of sport that continues to undermine the education linked to it.

The NBA is there in front of everyone, it is an example to be inspired with admiration and will to study the many virtues in the best way that allows you to transport them to us without changing the nature of our basketball but keeping in mind what people want, what the fans want, heritage without which there would be nothing of all that we are talking.
