Accompanied by other protests propalestinisic demonstrators, the Italian cycling professional Filippo Ganna has won the 18th stage of the Vuelta á España. The 29-year-old from the Ineos Grenadier team won the short single time trial in Valladolid in front of the Australian Jay Vine and the Portuguese João Almeida, both of whom drive for UAE Team Emirates.
In the overall ranking, the Dane Jonas Vingegaard, who this time was ninth, is further ahead. The lead of the Tour de France winner from 2022 and 2023 on the second-placed Almeida shrank from 50 to 40 seconds. Everything indicates a big showdown at the weekend.
Protests Propalestinian demonstrators are a central theme of this year’s Spain tour. The time trial on Thursday was shortened from just a good 27 to just 12.2 kilometers. People with Palestine flags stood on the edge of the route, but unlike previous stages, did not cause any incidents.
Avoiding Israel on jerseys
The protests relate to Israel’s procedure in the Gaza Strip. The demonstrators also criticize the Team Israel Prime Minister Tech, which has now been not named “Israel” on his jerseys.
The tour of the Spain ends on Sunday in the capital Madrid.
