Thibau Nys: Coach Reveals Cyclocross Break Details

In a season where he had several Debuuten, Thibau Nys suddenly made a radical decision. No more competitions in Canada, and so immediately at the end of the season. His coach Paul van den Bosch comes with an explanation for his decision.

Nys is muscle

However, we don’t have to look for it. “He had the feeling that it was up,” it sounds logical at Van den Bosch. That was actually noticeable in the Brittany Classic. After all, Nys only finished 116th, more than five minutes from winner Arnaud de Lie. That in a competition that should also be good.

“Then you also have to be honest with the team and dare to report that,” says Van den Bosch at Het Nieuwsblad. “Lidl-Trek has all the understanding of that. Canada is also a long journey. To go all the way there in a condition that is insufficient …”

It has already been a tough season for Nys, Van den Bosch continues: “Men like Pogacar (so far 43, ed.) And Van der Poel (40, ed.) Also come to that number. After the cross season he had one week of rest and then the preparation for the Basque Country and the Ardennes classics.”

Summer full of problems

And then there was that difficult summer period. A lot was expected from his first Tour de France, but a few things threw a lot of soot in the works. “It started with that heavy fall on altitude training in the Sierra Nevada,” Van den Bosch recapitulates.

“When he then wanted to gain a race rhythm in the Baloise Belgium Tour, he fell ill. 39 degrees fever, one week before the Belgian championship and two weeks before the Tourstart … he fell from one misery to the other.”

In this way it was now decided to end his road season early. On November 1 – in the Koppenbergcross – Nys is already starting a new winter in the field. And that will also be quite filled again, Van den Bosch reports: “He will certainly ride a fully-fledged cross season with 25 competitions and perhaps the last cross will be the World Cup again.”
