- The TV stations have to hide negative reactions to Donald Trump at the US Open final.
- After ten years of absence, Trump returns to the tournament as a guest of Rolex.
- The US President may only be shown on TV during the national anthem.
- Rolex ‘invitation could be related to the current Swiss customs dispute.
Donald Trump was a regular guest at the US Open for decades, like many other New York Society Sizes. But since 2015 he stayed away from the tournament. This after he was loudly boosted at the quarterfinal between Venus and Serena Williams in the Arthur Ashe stage.
A few months earlier, Trump joined the US presidential campaign in 2016, which he was to win against Hillary Clinton. His detour into politics made him a polarizing figure.
Ten years later, Trump for the first time again honored the US Open on the occasion of the final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Which gives the tournament additional publicity, but also ensures great hectic pace. Investigative journalist Ben Rothenberg was admitted to an email in which the TV stations are asked to hide any negative reactions to the US president. In other words: in the country in which the freedom of the press is capitalized, the US Open intervenes in the reporting.
Trump is only shown during the hymn
The mail literally says: «During the opening ceremony, the president is shown with the national anthem in the international TV signal and in the Ashe Court feed. We ask all Broadcaster to refrain from showing disorders or reactions in connection with the presence of the president in any form. This also includes the additional news or mood pictures of the Broadcaster. »
The organizer’s plan to show Trump only during the national anthem is already an effective means of shielding it in front of the expected boos. And even in the further course of the transmission, no possible protests or negative reactions from the audience on Trump for the global television audience may be shown. That means, for example, if whistles against Trump can be heard, the cameras must not swing on the US president afterwards.
Does Rolex want the US President to be mild?
It is also interesting that Trump does not visit the tennis spectacle at the invitation of the tournament, but as a guest of Rolex – the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer, who has a large box at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Rolex is omnipresent in tennis as a sponsor of the largest tennis tournaments and numerous stars such as Federer, Alcaraz and Sinner.
It is quite possible that Rolex wants to mild the US President in the customs dispute with Switzerland. The watch industry is severely affected by the horrendous 39 percent tariffs to Swiss exports to the USA.
