Due to the increased safety precautions by visiting US President Donald Trump, the US Open final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz was only 49 minutes late.
The organizers had initially postponed the beginning of the final in New York between the world ranking and the world ranking second “due to the applicable security measures” to 8:30 p.m. CEST (2:30 p.m. local time) to “give fans more time to take their places”, it said in a message.

At the start of the game, however, numerous of the almost 24,000 places were still available at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The measures therefore caused criticism. «It is 2:00 p.m. and (the stadium, editor’s note) more than half empty, there is only one way. Thank you, Trump !!! » wrote the angry tennis icon-and confessed Trump opponent-Martina Navratilova at X.
A contingent of the Secret Service was used around the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. Trump visited the Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2015, and around 45 minutes before the start of the game he showed himself with a red tie for the first time in front of his lodge in the Arthur Ashe stage.
