The best athletes in the world will find the track from September 13 at the National Stadium in Tokyo (Japan), where the Olympic Athletics events took place in 2021. More than 2,000 athletes in around 200 countries will compete for this 20th edition of the Worlds in which the French will try to raise their skinny check -ups in recent years.
What stars to watch?
As with each World Cup, the track promises to be full of stars. Starting with the sprint events with the presence of Noah Lyles out of 100 m among men, holding the title and Olympic champion in Paris. Among women, the triple Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is competing for her last official competition. She will have to work to hope for a last medal in front of sizes like Julien Alfred or Sha’Carri Richardson.
Sacred in 2022 and 2023, double Olympic champion in title of the discipline, the king of the 3,000 m steeple Soufiane el-Bakkali will aim for the hat-trick. He will not be the only master of his discipline present in Tokyo since Armand Duplantis, record holder of the pole jump, will also target a hat -trick.
Other champions of more confidential disciplines will be followed like Nafissatou Thiam in heptathlon, triple Olympic champion in the matter. It is also possible to quote Jakob Ingebrigtsen (1,500 m and 5,000 m), double Olympic champion with a title in each event.
What chances of French medal?
A gold medal thanks to Kevin Mayer in 2022 in Eugene, a silver medal thanks to the 4×400 m in 2023 in Budapest… The recent history of the French at the Worlds is not glorious but this 20th edition has some reasons of hope. Starting with the 110 m hurdles with 3 medal chances: Wilhem Belocian, Just Kwaou-Mathey and Sasha Zhoya. You will have to fight to hope for a podium but their state of form allows you to hope for a good surprise on arrival.
Winner of the Diamond League final on 3,000 m, Jimmy Gressier is in good shape this season. He also broke his French record on 5,000 m and can claim a charm over this distance or over 10,000 m. Among the other chances of medal, there is Yann Chaussinand, triple French launch champion of hammer but who will discover the World Cup event after an honorable 8th place at the Paris Games.
Author of the 2nd world performance of the year in triple jump with 17.52 m in Talence at the French championships, Melvin Raffin dreams of doing a blow. For its first Worlds, a podium would be a great feat for the 27 -year -old athlete.
In women, Hilary Kpatcha can also ambition to climb on the podium. Second best French performer in the history in long jump with 7.02 m, Toulousaine is in the form of her life. What hope for a possible feat in Japan.
