Luis Suárez (38) was blocked for the spit attack on an opposing official after the lost Leagues Cup final against the Seattle Sounders (0: 3) for six players last weekend. As the organizer’s disciplinary committee announced on Friday, the lock only applies to the next edition of the tournament. However, the North American Major League Soccer (MLS) reserves the right to impose further penalties.
Suárez was stormed on Sound’s middle field player Obed Vargas immediately after the final whistle and had taken the 20-year-old into the sweat box. This developed from a discussion between the parties of both teams, in which the spit attack came. For Miamis Sergio Busquets, the tumults also resulted in a lock of two games.
Tomas Aviles, another teammate from Suárez, Busquets and the eight -time world footballer Lionel Messi, was blocked for three games. On Seattles, Steven Lenhart was blocked from the SUUNDER coaching team for five games.
Suárez, who had previously been closed in his career for biting and racist insults for up to four months, had already apologized for his behavior on Thursday. “It was a moment of great tension and frustration, in which things happened immediately after the game that should not have happened, but that doesn’t justify my reaction,” wrote Suarez on Instagram. He “made a mistake” and regretted him “sincerely”.
