There is a crisis in Canada, says the country’s prime minister.
Why?
Connor McDavid has not signed for Edmonton yet.
– It’s a deep crack, says Mark Carney.
With just a month left for the NHL season 25/26, most of it revolves around a man in the league: Connor McDavid.
As so many times before, the superstar has ended up in the news columns, but this time it is not about his qualities on the ice but the rumors that renovate him outside it.
McDavid has only one year left on its current contract with Edmonton and has been able to extend the agreement since July 1 this summer but have chosen to wait.
It has now created a great concern with the club’s supporters – including Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, who this week gave a speech to Canada’s liberal party.
– Let’s realize it … we are in a crisis. The global trading system is overturned, the supply chains have been destroyed and … McDavid has not signed on.
Carney has long been open with her support for Edmonton, who has not won the Stanley Cup since 1990.
– This is not a wound, it is a deep crack. It is in times like these you have to understand what you have … Draisaitl, Hyman, Nugent-Hopkins. We have to take advantage of our strengths and our values, he continues and among the audience is high laughter.
McDavid can move
The Prime Minister then joked that Canada can think of redoing its upcoming budget to suit Connor McDavid and ultimately help the Edmonton win the Stanley Cup.
– Connor, if there is anything we can do in the budget ahead … we will spend less, we will invest more, so we can take the Stanley Cup home to Canada again.
McDavid himself has not wanted to reveal when or if he will even sign for Edmonton. In an interview last week, he told me that anything can happen.
– All options are left on the table. It can mean a shorter agreement, a longer agreement, no agreement at all.
