A storm has caused floods, flight cancellations and other damage in Mallorca. Until 6:00 p.m. there were around 80 missions on the Spanish holiday island, especially because of flooded streets and basements as well as fallen trees, as the emergency service of the Balearic Islands announced. The Mallorcan capital Palma and Calvià in the southwest of the island were particularly affected with 41 and 18 missions.
According to the Aena airport authority, 41 flight cancellations, nine detours and numerous delays were registered at Son Sant Joan Airport in Palma. In total, 906 flights were planned for Tuesday in Palma, it said. Media reported chaos.
The authorities had announced up to 50 liters of rain per square meter for Tuesday. According to official information, storm gusts reached more than 90 kilometers per hour. Several trees were also uprooted by the strong wind on the sea promenade in Palma.
From the late afternoon, the situation improved increasingly. However, the danger is not completely banned: the second highest warning level orange, which is also called for the other Balearic Islands for the other Balearic Islands, is still valid until 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
