Fernando Santos: Baku Failure After Euro Win

Veteran Portuguese coach leaves national team post by mutual consent

From Euro Glory to Baku Nightmare: Fernando Santos Fails in 11-Game Spell

The Azerbaijan Football Federation AFFA confirmed on Monday the departure of head coach Fernando Santos ending the 70 year old Portuguese manager’s tenure by mutual agreement.

Santos who previously led Portugal to Euro 2016 glory failed to deliver with Azerbaijan. In 11 match, his side recorded nine defeats and 2 draw without single victory.

According to Azerisport.com, AFFA didn’t initially discuss financial compensation for the early termination.

However Santos agent is expected in Baku soon to negotiate settlement. It remains unclear whether the full contract payout will be demanded or if compromise will be reached.

With crucial 2026 World cup qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday, AFFA’s placed U21 coach Aykhan Abbasov in temporary charge.

Santos exit marks another setback for Azerbaijani football as the national team continues to search for stability and its 1st win in the ongoing qualifiers.
