Orienteering Under the Stars Kicks Off the Festivities

The European Sports Week officially launches this Friday, September 19th, with an electrifying Orienteering Night. Imagine navigating the terrain by headlamp, relying on your wits and a compass – it’s a true test of skill and endurance, much like a nighttime tactical training exercise. The adventure begins at 8:00 PM at the Zemgale olympic Center. For those eager to participate, registration is open online until September 15th at 11:59 PM. While online sign-ups are encouraged for guaranteed entry,a limited number of on-site registration cards will be available on the day of the event for those who decide to join the fray last minute.

Pupil Athletics: Future Stars Take the Track

Get ready to witness the raw talent of Jelgava’s youth as the 55th annual pupil athletics competition takes center stage on September 24th at 2:00 PM.Held at the Zemgale Olympic Center’s janis Lūšs Stadium, this event is a breeding ground for future champions. students from Jelgava schools will compete across two age brackets: those born between 2006-2009 and the younger cohort born in 2010-2011. This mirrors the structure seen in many U.S. youth sports leagues, fostering fair competition.

Schools are handling registrations via email to Mayaactina@inbox.lv,with a deadline of September 23rd.The best part? There’s no limit to the number of participants a school can send, ensuring maximum involvement. Athletes can showcase their versatility by competing in up to three disciplines, though a strategic choice is needed as participation in both the 400m and 800m races is prohibited – a common rule in track and field to prevent overexertion.

The event features a thorough programme including the 100m dash, 400m and 800m runs, high jump, long jump, shot put, javelin throw, and the always exciting 4x100m relay. Event specifics, like the weight of the shot put and javelin, will be adjusted based on age groups, ensuring safety and appropriate challenge, much like how equipment is scaled for younger athletes in American football or baseball.

This competition is proudly organized by the Jelgava Sports Service Center, underscoring the city’s commitment to fostering athletic advancement.

Boat Tour Around the Islands: A Relaxed pace for All

For those seeking a more leisurely yet engaging experience, the European Sports Week has you covered. Due to popular demand, a captivating boat tour around the castle and postal islands has been added to the schedule. This scenic excursion will take place on September 27th at 12:00 PM.
